A Meeting 50 years in the making
Marking its 50th anniversary, the International Herpetological Symposium (IHS) proudly reflects on a journey that began with a small gathering at Hood College in 1976 and has since evolved into a global platform for sharing research on amphibians and reptiles. Over five decades, IHS’s unique blend of academic herpetologists and private herpetoculturists has created an unparalleled forum where knowledge flows freely and collaborations thrive.
As we mark this golden milestone, we extend a heartfelt invitation to everyone who has ever attended an International Herpetological Symposium to join us in celebrating our 50th. This year’s gathering is not only a symposium, but a true reunion—a chance to reconnect with friends, mentors, and colleagues who have helped shape the fields of herpetology and herpetoculture. Together, we will honor the tremendous growth our community has experienced over the past five decades, from pioneering research to the flourishing of herpetoculture worldwide, while looking ahead to the findings and collaborations yet to come.

REGISTRATION COMING SOON!
As we celebrate fifty years of the International Herpetological Symposium, we couldn’t imagine a better setting than the Chiricahua Desert Museum. This golden anniversary promises to be one of our most exciting gatherings yet, with big-name speakers (to be announced soon), our first-ever IHS Bioblitz on July 29th, and a blowout icebreaker to follow. Throughout the week, attendees can expect field herping galore—including guided excursions for our junior herpers—special guests, the return of both poster sessions and the Advancing Herpetoculture track, and a bonus Chelonian Symposium on Sunday at no additional cost. More than just a meeting, this 50th IHS is a celebration of our community’s legacy, a showcase of its brightest voices, and an invitation to help shape the next fifty years of herpetology.

ABOUT
The first Symposium of Captive Propagation and Husbandry of Reptiles and Amphibians was held in June 1976. That inaugural meeting at Hood College in Frederick, MD, eventually evolved into what we know today as the International Herpetological Symposium (IHS).
Each year, the IHS is held in a different location and hosted by a zoological, herpetological, or herpetocultural institution. Its purpose is two-fold:
-
To provide an annual symposium for the dissemination of information and research pertaining to the natural history, conservation biology, captive management, and propagation of amphibians and reptiles
-
To build a community open to all individuals who are interested in reptiles and amphibians, and provide a platform that fosters the exchange of ideas and information
Individuals from all areas of herpetology and herpetoculture are involved in the planning of each event, and all are invited to attend.
